Church Prayer Meeting

Wednesday 8th February, 8.00-9.15pm

All of the adult small groups of St Andrew the Great join together to pray. This month we are meeting in the Round Church.

We view this meeting as being at the heart of church life. Whenever God's family gather, prayer is a primary activity—just as in the first New Testament church:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42 NIV

Therefore, as a church family, we prioritise prayer together through the monthly Church Prayer Meeting and through the Church Prayer Diary (issued monthly and available at the back of the church building). To show this priority, many of our small groups don't meet separately during the week of a prayer meeting.

While unbelievers are welcome to join us, it is one of the few church meetings where we presume that most people are Christians and encourage people to pray in small groups. There's no pressure to pray out loud but it is great encouragement to the others in your group to hear you. Prayer is hard work but we believe in a powerful, loving Father God and want to commit our life as church to his hands.

Fill in the form below or email the Church Office if you would like to join us.

Saturday 24th March 2012, 10am-4pm

No Compromise: A day to meet with other Christian women with talks by Jackie Mann on Malachi.

You will be able to attend one of the following seminars:

Seminar 1: Compromised Giving

The people of God had lost sight of God’s covenant love and his judgement. As a result they had a much compromised attitude to their giving. Instead of giving God the very best animals for sacrifice, they were only willing to part with injured, crippled and diseased animals. The prophet Malachi accuses them of “robbing God” by keeping for themselves that which was due to God and belonged to him. In this seminar we will think about what God desires from us in terms of our attitude towards giving. We will also think about the reasons why we sometimes compromise our giving. We’ll look at the heart motivation for devoting our whole lives to God and giving him the very best of all we are and have.

Seminar 2: Compromised Faith

The people of God have lost sight of God’s covenant love for them and his judgement. As a result they are doubting God’s covenant promises and saying harsh things about him. They complain and moan about his commitment and goodness to them. They look at their pagan neighbours and wonder if they would be better off without God. We all have these feelings from time to time, but what should we do with those feelings? How can we recapture our faith in God’s goodness? Is it wrong to doubt and think those things? This seminar will explore those feelings and doubts and encourage us to grow in trust of God.

Seminar 3: Compromised leadership

The people of God were led by a team of Priests, who had the job of teaching God’s word and setting a godly example to the people. Malachi rebukes the leadership for compromising attitudes and for setting an ungodly example. Malachi also paints a picture of what all leaders should be striving for. This will be a relevant seminar if you are in any type of leadership role at church – teaching children, youth, women, church committees.

Seminar 4: Compromised Relationships

The people of God have forgotten God’s covenant love and commitment to them and this has had implications for the way they think about their own relationships. They were meant to be ‘set apart’ but instead were marrying their pagan neighbours. They were meant to reflect God’s character in their relationships but instead were breaking the covenant of marriage and seeking divorce. What does God think about these two issues? Why are they so important for the Christian to think through? How can we help others think these issues through and seek to be obedient ourselves?

Seminar 5: Compromised Worship

God wanted a people that were ‘set apart’ to obey him and worship him. A people that will love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength. Malachi rebuked the people of God for their contemptible worship and the attitudes of their heart. This seminar looks at the kind of Worship that God is seeking from his people and why it’s so important. Obviously, we won’t be sacrificing animals in our churches so we’ll think about what the New Testament says about God pleasing worship today.
