St Andrew the Great church, Cambridge

Church Prayer Meeting

On the first Wednesday of each month, all of the adult small groups of St Andrew the Great join together for a central Church Prayer Meeting. We view this meeting as being at the heart of church life. Whenever God's family gather, prayer is a primary activity—just as in the first New Testament church:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42 NIV

Therefore, as a church family, we prioritise prayer together through the monthly Church Prayer Meeting and through the Church Prayer Diary (issued monthly and available at the back of the church building). To show this priority, many of our small groups don't meet separately during the week of a prayer meeting.

While unbelievers are welcome to join us, it is one of the few church meetings where we presume that most people are Christians and encourage people to pray in small groups. There's no pressure to pray out loud but it is great encouragement to the others in your group to hear you. Prayer is hard work but we believe in a powerful, loving Father God and want to commit our life as church to his hands.

What happens when?

Church Prayer Meetings are from 8.00-9.30pm on the first Wednesday of most months. A meal is available in the auditorium from 7.00pm for a small donation.

The pattern is slightly different in April, July and August.

  • In April we meet for our Annual Parochial Church business meeting on a Wednesday instead of holding a Church Prayer Meeting. This is often not the first Wednesday - check the service sheet for details or contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • In July we combine our adult small groups for a series of teaching evenings. Details will be announced in due course—check the special events page.
  • In August we do not hold a Church Prayer Meeting.
